Have you ever felt a tightness in your chest the moment you walked into a specific room? Or noticed your shoulders hiking up toward your ears during a stressful conversation, even when you’re trying to stay calm?
Often, we try to "talk" ourselves out of these feelings. We tell ourselves, “I’m safe now,” or “There’s no reason to be anxious.” But our bodies don't always listen to our logical minds. This is because trauma and chronic stress aren't just stored in our memories—they are stored in our muscles, our posture, and our nervous systems.
What is Sensorimotor Psychotherapy?
Traditional therapy is often "top-down," meaning we use the thinking part of our brain to process emotions. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a "bottom-up" approach. It recognizes that the body often remembers what the mind has tried to forget.
By focusing on physical sensations—the "sensorimotor" experience—we can access the deep parts of the brain where trauma is held. This modality helps you complete the physical actions that were "frozen" during a past event, allowing your body to finally realize that the danger is over.
The Three Stages of Body-Centered Healing
Healing isn't a straight line, but in Sensorimotor work, we generally follow this path:
1. Stabilization and Symptom Reduction: Before we dive into the past, we help you find "safety" in your body today. We identify your "Window of Tolerance" and learn how to ground yourself when you feel too "high" (anxious) or too "low" (numb).
2. Processing: We gently look at the physical habits you’ve developed to survive. Do you collapse your chest when you're sad? Do you clench your jaw when you're unheard? We explore these "micro-movements" to release the stored energy behind them.
3. Integration: We help you create new physical "blueprints." You might practice standing with your feet wide for stability or pushing your hands out to set a boundary. These physical shifts send a powerful message to your brain: “I am capable. I am protected.”
Why the Body is the Key
When we experience a threat, our body prepares to fight, flee, or freeze. If we couldn't do those things at the time (for example, if we were a child or in a trapped situation), that energy stays "stuck" in our physical frame. Sensorimotor therapy gives that energy an exit strategy. It bridges the gap between knowing you are safe and feeling you are safe.
A Tool for Regulation: The "Body Scan for Safety"
Next time you feel a wave of anxiety, try this instead of trying to "think" your way out of it:
The Somatic Check-In
Notice the Sensation: Where do you feel the anxiety? Is it a knot in your stomach? A tightness in your throat?
Describe it: Use "neutral" words. Is it heavy? Sharp? Hot? Moving or still?
Find a "Resource": Scan your body for a place that feels neutral or calm—maybe your big toe, your earlobe, or your left elbow.
Pendulate: Move your attention back and forth between the "tight" spot and the "calm" spot. Notice how the intensity of the tightness begins to shift just by acknowledging the calm elsewhere.
People Also Ask
Is Sensorimotor Psychotherapy effective for PTSD?
Yes. It is specifically designed to treat the "somatic" (physical) symptoms of PTSD that talk therapy sometimes misses, such as flashbacks, numbing, and hyper-vigilance. By working with the body’s natural defense responses, it helps the nervous system return to a state of equilibrium.
How long does Sensorimotor therapy take?
The timeline varies. Some people find immediate relief from physical symptoms within a few sessions of "stabilization," while processing deeper, developmental trauma often requires a longer-term commitment to ensure the body feels safe enough to release old patterns.
Who can benefit from Sensorimotor therapy?
This approach is highly beneficial for anyone who:
Feels "disconnected" or numb from the neck down.
Struggles with chronic tension, pain, or "unexplained" physical symptoms.
Finds that talking about their trauma makes them feel worse or "flooded."
Wants to understand the physical link between their emotions and their body.
Has "tried everything" in talk therapy but still feels stuck in the same physical ruts.
Is Sensorimotor therapy right for me?
Sensorimotor therapy may be a good fit if you:
Are curious about how your body holds onto your life story.
Want practical, physical tools to manage your anxiety or depression.
Are ready to move beyond "talking about it" and into "feeling through it."
Prefer a pace that respects your body’s limits and emphasizes safety and choice.

Final Thoughts
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy reminds us that our bodies are not our enemies—they are wise messengers. By learning to listen to the language of your nervous system, you can move from a state of "survival" into a state of "living."
Exploring therapy with a trained clinician provides the supportive environment where you can decode your body's signals, release the past, and rediscover a sense of physical and emotional freedom.
