Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy in Ontario: Lived Experience & Affirming Care
A Different Kind of Support for Your Unique Brain
Neurodivergence has existed as long as humans have been alive. Whether you look deeply into the history of the human race or dive deeply into your personal ancestry. Neurodivergent people have been living (and thriving) for millennia. Many of us, however, have been doing so in hiding or while masking to neurotypicals. If you take a moment to look around, you may start noticing that neurodiversity is all around you!
At Your Story Counselling Services, we believe that the world is a better place when the full spectrum of neurodiversity is celebrated! We move away from the medical model that views Neurodivergence as something to be fixed and to conform to.
We embrace the Neurodiversity Paradigm: the belief that ADHD, Autism, AuDhd and other neurotypes are natural and valuable variations of the human brain.
Whether you are formally diagnosed, self-identified, or questioning, our Neuro-affirming therapists in Vaughan, Markham, and across Ontario are here to support you in building a life that accommodates your brain, rather than forcing your brain to fit the world.

What is Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy?
Our Neurodivergent-Affirming Framework
Neurodivergent-affirming care is a foundational commitment to your autonomy. It means your therapist will never try to "train" you to act neurotypical or treat your natural traits as symptoms to be eliminated.
Our neurodivergent affirming practice actively integrates the following pillars into every session:
-
Identity-First Language: We mirror how you choose to define yourself. We respect and utilize your preference for terms like Autistic person, ADHDer, AuDhd, neurospicy or neurodivergent individual.
-
Affirming Care (with or without a label): We recognize that the structures of our society mean that access to diagnosis is not always available to everyone, and that, for many, formal labels cause more harm than help. We celebrate and welcome all who identify as neurodivergent, with or without a formal diagnoses becasue we know that what's important is your voice and how you want to live your life.
-
Sensory Safety: A hyper-aroused nervous system cannot process trauma or stress. Whether you meet with us in-person in Vaughan or via Virtual Therapy across Ontario, we prioritize your sensory comfort, we know that it is helpful to sometimes move, turn your camera off, adjust lighting, or use fidgets.
-
Validation of PDA (Pervasive Drive for Autonomy): Traditional therapeutic "homework" or directives can accidentally trigger an intense nervous system threat response for individuals with a PDA profile. We deeply understand this dynamic and work with your need for collaboration and autonomy, never against it.
-
Anti-Ableist Perspective: We recognize that the majority of your daily exhaustion doesn't stem from who you are, but from a mismatch between how your brain processes the world and the inaccessible, high-demand environment you are forced to navigate.

Neurodivergent Affirming vs. Neurotypical Conforming Therapy
Traditional talk therapy often uses a Neurotypical Conforming approach. In those spaces, the unstated goal is compliance: teaching you how to hide your traits, mask your struggles, manage your "deficits," and look as neurotypical as possible to make the world around you more comfortable.
At Your Story Counselling, we practice Neurodivergent Affirming Care. We shift the focus away from trying to "fix" your brain, moving instead toward radical acceptance, nervous system regulation, and environmental adjustment.
The Core Goal of Support
-
Neurotypical Conforming Approach: Focuses on reducing neurodivergent behaviours, such as suppressing safe stimming or forcing uncomfortable eye contact to meet social expectations.
-
Neurodivergent Affirming Approach: Prioritizes safe self-expression, unmasking, authenticity, and discovering healthy, personal ways to regulate your unique nervous system.
The Therapeutic Mindset
-
Neurotypical Conforming Approach: Operates under the belief that your brain has a pathology, disorder, or inherent defect that needs to be treated, managed, or cured.
-
Neurodivergent Affirming Approach: Recognizes your brain as a natural, valuable variation of human biology. The distress you feel is a result of navigating a world built exclusively for neurotypicals.
The Clinical Framework
-
Neurotypical Conforming Approach: Relies heavily on high-demand cognitive strategies (such as traditional, rigid CBT) that can inadvertently cause profound masking, self-gaslighting, and eventual autistic burnout.
-
Neurodivergent Affirming Approach: Utilizes low-demand, sensory-safe, expressive, and somatic strategies that deeply respect your energy limits and nervous system capacity.
The Executive Function Focus
-
Neurotypical Conforming Approach: Pushes you to overcome Executive Dysfunction using neurotypical time-management tools and sheer willpower, often increasing feelings of shame or failure.
-
Neurodivergent Affirming Approach: Works entirely with your dopamine levels and natural pacing. Focuses on unmasking, building accommodations, and modifying your environment to reduce daily friction so that you can life your most successful and authentic life.

Beyond Talk Therapy: Sensory-Friendly & Expressive Modalities for Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy
Traditional talk therapy requires a massive amount of executive functioning: you have to sit still, organize your thoughts into words, linearize your experiences, and maintain eye contact. When you are already dealing with Autistic burnout or ADHD paralysis, talk therapy can feel like an exhausting chore.
To make our care truly sensory-affirming, we integrate creative, somatic, and non-verbal approaches that allow your nervous system to process trauma and emotions safely.
Art Therapy for Neurodivergent Brains
Art therapy bypasses the need for spoken words, making it an incredible tool for late-diagnosed adults, those with alexithymia (difficulty identifying emotions), or individuals with a highly visual AuDHD profile.
-
Low-Demand Regulation: Engaging with clay, paint, or collage acts as a form of "intentional stimming" that calms a hyper-aroused nervous system.
-
Processing without Overwhelm: Externalizing internal chaos onto a canvas allows you to explore complex feelings without the pressure of finding the "perfect" words.
Music Therapy & Auditory Sensory Safety for Neurodivergent Brains
Music is inherently structured yet infinitely flexible, making it deeply resonant for both Autistic and ADHD brains. Our sensory-affirming music therapy offers:
-
Dopamine-Friendly Regulation: Using rhythm and sound to gently shift your brain out of under-arousal (freeze states) or over-arousal (meltdown states).
-
Co-Regulation: Creating sound together provides a low-pressure, shared experience that builds trust and connection without the demands of standard social interaction.
Our Neurodivergent Identified & Affirming Team
At Your Story Counselling, we believe that lived experience is a clinical superpower. Many of our clinicians identify as part of the Neurodivergent community: living with the same ADHD, Autistic, or AuDHD unique traits, quirks, and struggles as you do.
This shared identity means you don't have to explain why you’re fidgeting, why eye contact is hard, or why you’re experiencing "sensory ick." We’ve been there.
The Power of Intersectional Lived Experience: Queer & BIPOC Neurodivergence
Neurodivergence does not exist in a vacuum. Navigating ADHD, Autism, or an AuDHD profile looks entirely different depending on your race, culture, gender, and sexuality. Traditional, neurotypical spaces have historically left out multi-marginalized voices, which is why we proudly feature neurodivergent-identified clinicians who are Queer, BIPOC, or both.
-
Queer Neurodivergent Lived Experience (QTPOC & LGBTQIA+): There is a massive statistical overlap between gender-diversity, queerness, and neurodivergence. Our queer neurodivergent clinicians understand the unique "double unmasking" process—safely peeling back the layers of both neurotypical expectations and heteronormative standards. We provide a space where you never have to separate your sexuality or gender identity from your neurotype.
-
BIPOC Neurodivergent Lived Experience: For Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour, neurodivergence is often heavily masked due to safety, systemic racism, and cultural stigma. Our BIPOC neurodivergent clinicians understand the exhausting intersection of managing Racial Battle Fatigue alongside executive dysfunction, as well as the unique challenges of navigating a late-in-life diagnosis within immigrant or collectivist family dynamics.
-
The Layered Strength of Both: If you sit at the crossroads of being Queer, BIPOC, and Neurodivergent, your reality involves navigating multiple complex systems at once. Working with a clinician who shares these intersecting identities means your lived reality is fully seen, validated, and held with deep clinical nuance.
