Rediscover Connection
Stuck in the same disagreements? Do financial discussions turn into arguments? Do family visits bring stress? Do shared goals feel misaligned? Emotional distance can make you feel completely disconnected. Even when you understand each other's perspective, doing things differently can feel impossible.
Your Story Counselling offers compassionate couples therapy and marriage counselling in Vaughan, Markham, and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), as well as online couples counselling across Ontario. Our therapists support partners throughout York Region with recurring conflict, trust issues, intimacy challenges, parenting, and complex family or cultural expectations.
Couples therapy provides space to sort through disconnection, understand what each person brings to the relationship, and unpack the pressures holding you back. Together, we will explore what needs to change so you can move forward with clarity, alignment, and deeper connection.
What brings couples to counselling?
Whether you're healing from a major rupture or feeling distant, take the first step back toward one another. If this sounds like your relationship, we can help you find your way back to each other.
You keep having the same argument
The topic changes, but the pattern feels familiar. One person feels criticized and becomes defensive. The other feels unheard and tries harder to explain. Eventually, you stop talking without resolving much.
We can help you look more closely at how these conversations unfold and what each person is trying to communicate. Bring these patterns into therapy so we can help you understand them together.
Couples counselling that makes room for culture and family
People bring different understandings of love, respect, and responsibility to a relationship.
In one family, care may be expressed through sacrifice and practical help. In another, talking openly about feelings may be expected. Keeping problems private might feel respectful to one partner and isolating to the other.
These differences can be more noticeable when you are making decisions about marriage, money, children, holidays, or caring for parents.
We support intercultural couples and couples who share a cultural background but have different family experiences. Share a language, religion, or ethnicity? You may still have learned different things about relationships.
Our conversations might include:
Navigating financial and emotional support for relatives.
Discussing faith, marriage, and child-rearing.
Honouring tradition while creating new customs that reflect your values and experiences.
Balancing privacy and togetherness in a multi-family home.
Stabilizing support for your partner and loyalty to family.
Our culturally informed therapists can help you explore these aspects of a relationship in a safe, judgment-free environment.
Together, we can discover your shared values and turn them into decisions you both believe in.

The circumstances around your relationship matter
Work schedules, housing costs, caregiving, health concerns, and financial pressure all affect how much time and energy you have for each other.
Migration and discrimination can also shape a relationship. One partner may carry more responsibility for translating, navigating institutions, or supporting relatives. A queer partner may be included privately but excluded from family gatherings.
Those experiences deserve attention in couples therapy. Support needs to fit the choices and resources you actually have.
In couples therapy, we help partners navigate power and responsibility within the relationship. We know that extenuating circumstances can affect what matters most for folks. We make space for differences to be discussed and for perspectives to be heard. We truly believe that understanding someone's culture, history, and background allows us to understand and move forward better.

How we approach couples therapy
Our team brings perspectives from psychotherapy and social work. Depending on your clinician, sessions may draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy, the Gottman Method, and relational or systemic approaches.
Your therapist can explain how they work and discuss what fits your situation.
You can also bring uncertainty about your future together. Your goals may include reconnecting, understanding what continuing the relationship would require, or considering your next steps.
Together, we can work on:
Understanding your relationship patterns.
Uncovering how disagreements turn into defensiveness, withdrawal, repeated reassurance-seeking, or emotional disconnection.
Expressing what feels difficult
Creating a safe space to communicate underlying hurt, loneliness, resentment, or uncertainty.
Exploring underlying expectations
Examining how upbringing and cultural background shape your views on money, gender roles, parenting, loyalty, and family responsibility.
Building practical agreements.
Forming clear expectations for sharing responsibilities, setting family boundaries, and renewing trust.
Creating lasting change beyond therapy
Track real-world progress, ensure agreements are kept, and make discussions at home appear more manageable.
