About Kathy
Hello, I’m Kathy. One of the therapists here at Your Story Counselling.
Growing up in a family where emotions weren’t talked about or expressed, I came to realize how deeply that shaped the way I view myself, my relationships, and the world around me. We all need someone’s help to explore and understand why we feel or think a certain way when things seem off, and I hope to create that space for you.
I’m a registered psychotherapist and social worker with over five years of experience. During this time, I’ve worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds, helping them better understand their inner world and identify what truly matters to them.
I’m trained and certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the primary modality that informs my work. My passion lies in working with individuals and couples who have faced various life challenges, supporting them in feeling seen, understood, and accepted — both by themselves and by those they care about.
I believe deeply in the power of positive emotional experiences to foster growth and change. I trust that my clients know themselves best, and I strive to provide a warm, non-judgmental space for them to share their life stories.
Outside of work, you’ll likely find me spending time with my two lovely pups or tending to my garden. I enjoy activities that help me stay grounded and present in the moment. How about you?"
Who I Work Best With
I tend to work best with:
I especially enjoy supporting clients with trauma and relational distress.
The conversations I find myself having again and again
Couples often come in to share that they are poor at communicating with each other, or individuals come to tell me that they felt stuck in their life circumstances. I see myself helping clients to find their repeated patterns of coping and surviving, helping them to determine if that is serving them well, and what changes they can make to step out of their patterns. I noticed it’s the unknown that got client stuck; once they can make sense of their experiences and accept it, they then come up with their own solutions to their problems in life.
What gives me hope
My faith does ground me a lot when I find myself stuck or not knowing how to support my clients. And of course, my two lovely paw companions, that i can just hug them after a long day of sessions. My clients also teach me that healing is about growing from their pain, reclaiming their playful part, and finding their way to their loved ones.
What's my story
Being a Christian humbles me to understand the brokenness of life and how important connection and communities are. Growing up from an Asian traditional family, many of our experiences were suppressed, not talked about, not processed, hence I value a lot the importance of having a secure space to share life stories with someone who can listen non-judgementally. Restoring my relationship with my parents through my personal therapy has definitely helped me see the hope that repair is possible, when there’s emotional connection and love for the other person. All of these experiences helped me to respect client’s pace while supporting them, to be their safety net while they explored their path to healing.

What's it like to work with me
Many of clients appreciate my gentle and open approach in sessions, that they don’t feel pressured to share and that I am able to listen and respond without judging them.

Who are you when you're not working
I enjoy time with my family and friends, especially my puppies. I recharge by binge watching some K-drama. I enjoy singing karaoke, playing mahjong and going on road trips. I am currently learning more about AI and therapy outside of my work haha.
What misconceptions about therapy do you often challenge
That there is positive or negative emotions. In fact emotions are neutral but how we respond to it can create positive or negative impact to our lives.
That I am the “judge” to decide who’s right or wrong in couples’ conflict; I can only help them understand why they act things a certain way but I do believe there’s no “better” way, it’s about finding their middle ground.
